Debt, we are all too familiar with this word. We’ve all seen the ads on being in debt up to our eyeballs, on financial debt relief or debt consolidation. Debt can be deadly. When our debt becomes greater than our assets or when we owe more than what we are worth, then debt has taken control. It will create an environment of undo stress, fear, worry, and tension. It can become a prison without bars. Debt can become like a cancer that destroys marriages and families. But the good news is we can get out of debt if we discover the root cause.

REASONS WHY WE GO INTO DEBT

1. A lack of discipline. This can be seen in the desire for instant gratification. We want what we see, and we want it now. We need to practice delayed gratification. When we practice saying NO, our character then becomes stronger than our emotions.

2. A lack of contentment. We become dissatisfied with what we have, where we live, or what we drive, etc. so we fill the void with pleasure and things. Hebrews 13:5 says, “Keep yourself free from the love of money and be content with what you have because God has said I will never leave you or forsake you” Remember you have God and He is always with you, so be content with what you have, by always being thankful.

3. Searching for security. We think that security comes through possessions, homes, food, clothing, job, career, education or money. There’s only one real security, and that is God! Tolstoy said, “To know God is to live.”

4. Searching for significance. We want to fit in, to be someone, to be accepted, to be as good as others. We need to discover our worth and significance in God. The value of something is based on what someone will pay for it. God paid for us with the life of His Son. You’re valued.
