October 14, 1912, Teddy Roosevelt was 54 years old, and he was running for his third term for President of the United States as an Independent. As Mr. Roosevelt was making his way through the crowd, a lone gunman jumped in front of him and shot him at point-blank range the bullet sinking into his chest. Down he went, his men surrounding him said, “Mr. President, you’ve been shot, we must get you to the hospital.”
With that Teddy Roosevelt responded, “Get me to the platform” he arose to his full height, stood atop the platform grasping the podium with one hand, he reached into his front pocket and pulled out a blood-soaked speech. Leaning into the microphone, he said, to a hushed crowd, “I’ve just been shot, but it will take more than that to kill a bull moose.” Ninety minutes later, with his voice getting stronger, he turned and told his men, “Now you can take me to the hospital.”
Upon the doctors performing surgery, they discovered that the bullet had hit his fourth rib and lodged itself close to his lung in his massive chest muscle. As a young boy, Teddy Roosevelt’s father told him, “Son you have the mind, but you do not have the body, and without the body, the mind cannot go as far as it should, you must make your body. It’s hard work to make one’s body, but I know you will do it.”
He did, and that’s what saved his life. How about you? It’s never too late to get in shape! So I dare you to put yourself on a program of routine exercise, I dare you to get proper rest and eliminate illness from your life!
