April 10, 1912, the Titanic embarked on her maiden cruise from Southampton to New York with 2200 passengers on board. It sailed for only five days when the Titanic collided with an iceberg and sank in two hours and forty minutes. One thousand five hundred and twenty-three people lost their lives, only seven hundred and five survived. The Titanic had received six warnings to change course each time they the crew ignored them.
A shipwreck will do three things.
It will take you further than you wanted to go. The Titanic only wanted to go to New York. Instead, it went thirteen thousand feet to the bottom of the ocean.
A shipwreck will keep you longer than you wanted to stay. Captain Smith got the women and children off first, by then it was too late for him.
A shipwreck will cost you more than you wanted to pay. The people on board the Titanic paid thousands for their tickets, but the trip cost them their lives.
How do we avoid a shipwreck?
Don’t become so busy that your busyness makes you barren! Barren of God’s presence. Don’t become so busy that you forget what life is all about.
Allow your character to keep pace with your accomplishments. If opportunity puts something in your hand, without God first placing something in your heart, your character will be behind your achievements.
Avoid spiritual indifference. You’re sitting in the warmth of the sun; you fall asleep only to wake up later because you’re cold. The sun was shadowed by clouds, and you didn’t know when it happened. Spiritual indifference is so gradual; we slowly cool off! We gradually stop seeking God, lose our hunger for Him, slowly stop enjoying the company of good people and times of prayer.
But we don’t have to have a shipwreck! By treating each day like it was the last day we will finish strong!
