Louis B. Mayer, the founder of MGM as a young boy, got into a fight once at school and came out second best. At home that night he muttered offensive words against the other boy and vowed to get even. His mother heard him but said nothing. The next day the Mayer family went on a picnic out in the mountains, Louis’ mother called him over to a little clearing that faced a mountain wall. She told him to say what he said last night.
He was ashamed, but she insisted, and he said, “Damn you.” She told him to shout it as he had done. He did, and from the mountains all around came his words back to him saying, “Damn you.”
Now his mother told him to shout “Bless you.” He did, and the whole world seemed to be saying back to him “Bless you,” as the echo of his voice came back. Then she reminded him of the words of Christ. “Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you” Matt 5:44. Louis Mayer understood, and the law of the echo became the law of his life.
It’s an absolute truth that what we send out does come back. This truth is why God’s word is so filled with His promises and creates within us an attitude towards others of love, forgiveness, and acceptance. So let’s start sending out thoughts and words of blessing!
