Often in restaurants, when we gather, we lift our glasses, letting them hit each other, and we all say, “Cheers!” I’ve often wondered where this tradition came from, now I have zero evidence to support my claim, but I think it came from Jesus!

Jesus gave us three cheers, and they are considered the greatest cheers a person can have. When you consider the three things that destroy our happiness, peace of mind and bring more grief into our lives, you start to see how important and powerful these three cheers are.

First, let’s look at the opposite; the three things that take life from us. A sense of guilt, (no one can live long with guilt). Next, a feeling of forsakenness, (perhaps one of life’s greatest enemies is to feel all alone, that everyone has left or forsaken you). And the last is a fear of defeat. These three things have brought more misery and heartbreak than possibly anything else.

But don’t stop there because Jesus gave us Three Cheers. First, the cheer of forgiveness. Matthew 9:2, “But be of good cheer, your sins are forgiven.” Second, the cheer of companionship. Matthew 14:27, “Be of good cheer it is I, be not afraid.” And third, the cheer of victory. John 16:33, “In the world, you shall have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I’ve overcome the world.”

So the next time when you lift your glass remember the Three Cheers!
